When AI Gets It Wrong: Lessons from My Website-Building Journey

AI is an incredible tool for generating content, automating tasks, and speeding up workflows. But as I recently learned while using AI to build a website, it’s not infallible and knowing its limitations is just as important as knowing its strengths.

1. AI Can Make Things Up

One of the most surprising (and slightly alarming) things about AI is that it can generate content that looks completely legitimate but is entirely fictional. In my case, it confidently created fake testimonials and even listed contact details that didn’t exist! If I hadn’t carefully checked, I could have published misinformation without realising it.

For NGOs, this is a serious concern. Whether using AI for grant writing, social media, or website content, it’s critical to fact-check everything

2. The Right Tool Matters

The second lesson? Not all AI tools are created equal. I wasted an entire day wrestling with an AI website builder that promised ease of use but ended up being frustratingly inefficient. The experience reinforced a key point: choosing the right tool is just as important as using AI itself.

For time-poor NGO workers, this is where I can help. I test AI tools so you don’t have to, helping organisations navigate the overwhelming number of options to find the ones that truly deliver value.

What This Means for NGOs

AI is a powerful enabler, but it’s not a ‘set and forget’ solution. The key is knowing where it excels, where it struggles, and how to make it work for you. That’s where guidance and expertise can make all the difference.
